Keswick resident Bessie Elizabeth Harding turns 110 years old next week—and she’ll celebrate with a proclamation from Baltimore Mayor Jack Young.
Media are welcome to the celebration with Mayor Young, Ms. Harding, her family and the Keswick community on Monday, Nov. 25, 11:30 a.m., at Keswick, 700 W. 40th Street in Baltimore.
When Ms. Harding was born, in 1909, the New York Times published the world’s first movie review, the NAACP was founded and a stamp cost two cents. She has seen a lot in life, and she’s happy to talk about it.
Bessie Elizabeth Thorpe was born in Nathalie, Va. She moved to Baltimore in the mid-1930s and lived in various neighborhoods including Waverly, Poplar Grove and West Baltimore before eventually moving to Roland Park’s Keswick area.
She waited tables at the Mount Vernon Club on Mount Vernon Place for more than 30 years. She’s also a lifelong member of Enon Baptist Church in West Baltimore.
Ms. Harding married Carlton Harding of Baltimore and they enjoyed raising two nieces (Alice Moore Marshall and Eileen Moore Butler) and one nephew (Frank Lee Moore). She still loves spending time with her family.
