Joe Angel's career as the radio play-by-play announcer for the Baltimore Orioles began in 1988, the year the team lost 21 straight to start the year and finished with a then-team record 107 losses. His final season behind the microphone in 2018 was also historically bad.
In most of his 19 seasons with the club (1988-1990, 1992, 2004-2018), Angel was calling games for a losing team, but for the longtime voice of the Orioles, the wins and losses didn't matter because there was always someone who cared about the game.
"The key to that is that every game did matter. It mattered to the people on the field. It mattered to the people who took the time to watch it on television or turn the radio on," Angel said on Glenn Clark Radio Feb. 20. "That's why they were doing it because it mattered."
