Opening day of the new Maryland General Assembly was crowded with family and friends as 43 new delegates and 17 new senators (many of them former delegates) were sworn in along with the returning legislators.

Coping with the homicide rate and violence in Baltimore was one of the hottest topics on opening day. This is a photo taken a month ago of New Orleans Police Chief Harrison when he spoke to group visiting from Baltimore. On Facebook, Sen. Bill Ferguson says: "Within minutes, it was clear that this was the leader Baltimore needs and Baltimore deserves for Commissioner of our police department. " Also part of the group was Greater Baltimore Committee President Don Fry who said Harrison spoke to the visitors for an hour and was "very impressive." Mayor Catherine Pugh named him Tuesday after a long and tortured search for a new commissioner.
