The bestselling book shows how the three brains in the human body – head, heart, and gut – can help reengage the workforce.

SHIFT founder and CEO Joe Mechlinski launched his second bestselling book, Shift the Work, where he uncovers why 70% of the American workforce is disengaged and provides a roadmap to reversing this staggering statistic. Last week, the Wall Street Journal and USA Today listed the book as a bestseller.

While the unemployment rate dipped to 3.9% this year, the 2.4% quitting rate is the highest the country has seen since 2001, with employees citing “lack of appreciation” as a top driving factor.

Mechlinski suggests that employers can create better environments, and employees can reengage using neuroscience to understand the connections between the three brains in the head, heart and gut. Each sends a different signal - the head helps prioritize, the heart finds passion, and the gut discovers purpose.

“The majority of employees today don’t believe their work is about something bigger then themselves,” Mechlinski said. “This epidemic stems from employees being disconnected from company values and out of touch with their purpose. As a result, it has left employees at all levels feeling discouraged and stuck. This mindset impacts profitability, but more importantly, the morale and mental health of individuals. By tuning into what our bodies are saying, we can enhance our presence and performance – at work and home.”

Filled with incredible stories from Mechlinski’s past, Shift the Work also provides guided practices to encourage readers to overcome doubts and reconnect with their passions.

As someone who reads a few books per week and regularly writes about the books I read, this book was refreshing, raw, scientific, and powerful. Mechlinski doesn't just want you to be engaged at work, he wants your whole brain and body to be engaged at their highest level. He forces you to not only become a better thinker, but to become healthier—literally,” said Benjamin Hardy, contributor at Inc. Magazine. “Mechlinski's book,Shift The Work, explains how to really get engaged, which requires a holistic and extremely honest approach.”

From an early age, Mechlinski worked to put his own stamp on the way business in America is practiced.

At 23, he embarked on a mission to transform the purpose of business and revolutionize workforce engagement. He eventually launched SHIFT, a collective of businesses spanning consulting, executive membership and venture capitalism, which has been recognized locally and nationally as a ‘Best Place to Work’ by Inc. Magazine, and the Baltimore Business Journal.

SHIFT and Mechlinski have been featured on Bloomberg Radio and in Forbes, Inc. Magazine, Conscious Company, Entrepreneur and the Wall Street Journal.
