Struever will be recognized at 9th Annual WaveMaker Awards

The Baltimore District Council of The Urban Land Institute (ULI) is pleased to announce it has named Bill Struever the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award winner.

Struever, a founding partner and CEO with Cross Street Partners, will be recognized at ULI’s ninth annual WaveMaker Awards on Thursday, October 5 at Monument City Brewing Company Building at 1 North Haven Street in Baltimore.

ULI’s Lifetime Achievement Award is given to a recognized leader in the development community who has served more than two decades; has touched all aspects of development (acquisition, design, financing, implementation); and has touched a variety of different land uses (retail, office residential, hospitality, etc.).

Bill Struever is a visionary real estate pioneer who has spent his entire career finding creative ways to re-imagine urban properties. In 1974, he founded a company that would become Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse (SBER). The nationally-acclaimed development, construction and property management company’s legacy was to adapt and reuse economically obsolete industrial buildings, reclaim under-productive brownfields and transform neighborhoods through large scale, mixed use urban development. Struever continues to play a key role in sustainable development through his passion, creativity and commitment to rebuilding cities.

“Cities are real and authentic with unique histories and traditions reflected in their people and buildings. Old buildings are important celebrations of the rich traditions of a city and its people,” said Struever. “But it’s much more than just the buildings. We are all about revitalizing neighborhoods and providing opportunities.”

In 2010 Struever wound down the operations of SBER and launched a new partnership with former executives, Cross Street Partners. Cross Street Partners has built on the legacy of SBER with a fresh focus on revitalizing urban neighborhoods around centers of innovation and entrepreneurship.

“I feel blessed in that I love what I do. I’m having way too much fun to even think about retiring,” said Struever, whose mentor was Walter Sondheim Jr., a longtime civic leader who played a major role in desegregating Baltimore City’s schools and redeveloping downtown who died in 2007 at the age of 98. “And if I follow Walter I have 33 more years to go. I still have a lot of opportunities to continue to make meaningful change.”

While all of the projects he works on are important to him, Struever noted that the American Brewery on North Gay Street, the Under Armour World Headquarters (formerly Tide Point), and Fenway Park in Boston are some of his favorites.

“It is an honor to present Bill Struever with our Lifetime Achievement Award,” said Lisa Norris, ULI Baltimore District Council Coordinator. “Bill has always been a true leader in community revitalization efforts both here in Baltimore and around the country. His vision, passion, and commitment to rebuilding cities is second to none.”

Struever has received numerous awards for his business leadership and devotion to urban communities, education, the environment, and arts. Recently, he accepted the prestigious Urban Land Institute’s Award of Excellence for the preservation and redevelopment of Clipper Mill in Baltimore.

Some of Struever’s other projects include: Harbor East, Brewers Hill, Hoen Lithograph Building and Lion Brothers Building in Baltimore; American Tobacco in Raleigh, NC; Dayton Arcade in Dayton, OH; and Electric Works in Fort Wayne, IN.

The 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient was Stanley Fine, a partner with Rosenberg Martin Greenberg, LLP.
