Roland Park Baseball Builds "Field of Dreams" and Creates a Hall of Fame for the Volunteers

6/8/17

The Roland Park Baseball Leagues are completing their 66th year of providing a youth baseball leagues for the community as well as any boy or girl who wants to play baseball. The RPBL, whose age groups start at 5 and extend through teen travel is the largest youth baseball league in the greater Baltimore area.

On Saturday, June 3, 2017, the league celebrated two major events. First, we have leased and created our first baseball field in Mount Washington at 2250 Enslow Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21209. The RPBL has constructed several fields in the past. They include Macsherry Field, Green Fields, and Tudor Field; all fields are used with permission of the Baltimore School system or Baltimore Rec and Parks. The new field on Enslow Avenue is adjacent to the Rogers Avenue Fields where our TeeBallers have been playing since 2006, and the University of Baltimore has their driving range.

In addition to the new baseball field, the league introduced a Hall of Fame to recognize the volunteerism and contributions of the people who have given their hours, days, months and years for the benefit of the RPBL.
The first inaugural class is made up of 3 longtime Roland Parkers who have a combine 148 years of service to the league.  Charlie & Louise Macsherry are the heart and soul of the RPBL for 45 years. David Mock is one of the original coaches from the 1952 season. He served the league for 58 consecutive seasons in the role(s) of coach, equipment manager, treasurer, or league commissioner.

The league held a ceremony inducting Charlie, Louise and David at Springwell Senior Community located at 2211 West Rogers Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21209.  Following the one hour induction, which lasted an hour. Following the Hall of Fame, the crowd moved down to the New Field Dedication, next to Springwell. We were honored to have former Orioles player and MASN broadcaster and RPBL Trustee to assist with the ceremony. Fellow trustee and RPBL parent Steven Plank and his wife spoke to the hundreds of people on hand for the celebration.

Bagpipes provided music for the crowd much to the pleasure of the Macsherry's.The Bears and Tigers of the National League (ages 9-10) squared off with a playoff game to put the new field, and it's hand operated scoreboard to a successful test.
