Alzheimer's Assn. To Host Greater Baltimore Memory Walk Saturday

BALTIMORE - The Alzheimer's Association has selected a new location for its annual Greater Baltimore Memory Walk. Rain or shine, this year's event will occur Saturday, Oct. 31, at Oregon Ridge Park (13401 Beaver Dam Rd, Cockeysville).

"We are very excited to host the Greater Baltimore Memory Walk at Oregon Ridge," said Amanda Sciukas, special events manager for the Alzheimer's Association, Greater Maryland Chapter. "The change in venue will provide a fun, festive family atmosphere for all of our walkers, especially with the children's playground and spacious field."

Registration starts at 8 a.m. Participants are encouraged to come to in costume because the event is occurring on Halloween. Adding to the fun will be Halloween candy and light refreshments, music and entertainment for the whole family.

Walking teams will have their photos taken, and walkers who raise $100 will receive a Memory Walk t-shirt.  Memory Walk rub-off tattoos and bracelets will be available for purchase.

What's more, participants can decorate paper Forget-Me-Not flowers with the names or pictures of loved ones and "plant" the flowers in the "Garden of Memories."

The walk will commence at 9 a.m., following an opening ceremony focusing on the mission of the Alzheimer's Association and the announcement of the top three fundraising teams and top three fundraising individuals.

Walkers can opt for a paved route that measures less than one mile within the park, and a two-mile unpaved route around the park. Everyone is welcome to stay after the walk for additional refreshments and entertainment.

Memory Walk participants are encouraged to register early, as teams (four+ members) or individually. Registration is free and available online at www.alz.org/maryland. To register by phone, call 410-561-9099 or 1-800-272-3900.

Nationally presented by Genworth Financial, Memory Walk is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research programs. Since its inception in 1989, Americans who have participated in Memory Walk have raised more than $265 million.

Held in hundreds of communities across the country, Memory Walk calls on volunteers of all ages to become Champions in the fight against Alzheimer's. Champions include those living with the disease, families, caregivers, and corporate and community leaders.

The Maryland walks annually raise more than $500,000 and attract more than 2,200 participants and volunteers. Last year's Greater Baltimore Memory Walk drew over 875 walkers among 139 teams and raised over $155,000.

The Alzheimer's Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's research, care and support. Its mission is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Its vision is a world without Alzheimer's. For more information, visit www.alz.org/maryland.
