Baltimore School for the Arts Announces New Arts & Academic Faculty Members
Baltimore School for the Arts (BSA) recently announced the addition of BSA alum Warren Wolf as well as Dr. Jason Kissel, Nick Petr, and Edward Rotman as arts department faculty for the 2012-2013 school year. Meg Grouzard, Erica McLaurin, Erica Patterson, and Laura Kinsey also join the organization in the academic and support departments.
“All of our part-time arts teachers at BSA are also professional artists and we are excited to welcome these talented faculty members to our wonderful team,” said Dr. Christopher Ford, director of BSA. “The opportunity for our young artists to work with professionals is one of the unique things that makes BSA such a successful model for pre-professional training.”
Warren Wolf, a 1997 graduate of BSA, will be leading the BSA jazz program. Wolf is a graduate and former faculty member of the Berklee College of Music. Wolf is a multi-instrumentalist who has played and recorded with many of the world’s best musicians including Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Nicholas Payton, Mulgrew Miller, Lewis Nash, Christian McBride, Terri-Lyne Carrington, Bobby Watson, Roy Hanynes, Danilo Perez, and many others. Wolfe has recorded five records as a leader, including his most recent on the Mack Ave label, “Warren Wolf.”
Dr. Jason Kissel joins BSA as a Music Theory III teacher. Kissel is the Director of Music and Organist at The First & Franklin Street Presbyterian Church where he conducts the Sanctuary Choir and works with the Spire Series Committee in creating and presenting high quality arts programming for the community. He maintains a private teaching studio and has held high teaching positions atPennsylvania State University, Chatham College, and Westminster College. Kissel is the recipient for the James Winship Lewis Memorial Award, given by faculty and deans of the Peabody Conservatory, for his musical leadership within the Peabody community.
Nick Petr will teach sculpture as a member of BSA’s Visual Arts faculty. Petr received a degree in sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 2004. Previously, he was an art handler for MICA and served as an art assistant for MICA faculty Hugh Peacock and Jann Rosen-Queralt. Petr owns his own fabrication business, and has served as a subcontractor, carpenter and cabinetmaker for Witt Design and Fabrication and for Jesse Burrowes Metal and Wood Fabrication in Baltimore.
Edward Rotman will join BSA as an accompanist for the dance department. Rotman comes to BSA after seven years as ballet accompanist for Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, D.C, and is on the faculty of Washington School of Ballet and Maryland Youth Ballet. Rotman graduated from the Music College of St. Petersburg Conservatory and received a master’s degree in piano performance at the Belarus State Conservatory. Before coming to the U.S. he traveled all over the world as an accompanist for the Children’s Concert Chorus.
New academic staff include Meg Grouzard, who will teach World History and Government and brings six years of teaching experience in Baltimore City, and Erica Patterson, who will teach fitness as well as health. Support staff new this year include Erica McLaurin, an office assistant for Assistant Principal Charelle James, and Laura Kinsey, who will provide technical support to teachers and families as a member of the special education team.
Founded in 1980, Baltimore School for the Arts is a nationally recognized public high school that provides its students with intensive pre-professional training in the arts in conjunction with a rigorous academic curriculum. BSA graduates go on to the most selective arts and university programs nationwide and achieve prominence in theater, film, music, dance and visual arts. Additionally, BSA's TWIGS program offers free after-school arts instruction to more than 700 city elementary and middle school children.
