Abt Associates to Strengthen Health Systems in South Sudan
Abt Associates recently won a $25 million five-year project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to ensure the provision of high- quality, primary health care services in two of South Sudan’s States: Western Equatoria and Central Equatoria.
The Health Systems Strengthening Project (HSSP) will contribute to the USAID Mission’s strategic objective: to strengthen the Republic of South Sudan’s systems and to foster an enabling environment for improved health service delivery.
“We are thrilled to be able to continue to assist the world’s newest nation in improving the quality of health services,” said Diana Silimperi, Vice President of International Health Division at Abt Associates. “Abt has been working in South Sudan for several years in the agriculture sector and it is an honor to be able to share our health systems strengthening expertise.”
The project’s objectives include: increased management and leadership capacity in State Ministries of Health, County Health Departments, and Village Health Committees; strengthened health systems at the state and county levels, with particular attention to health information systems, financial management, and human resources; and increased coordination at the state and county levels.
There will be project offices opening in January 2013 in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, as well as a satellite office in Yambio.
