Maryland Is 11th Most Corrupt State in America

Based on data from the Justice Department, Business Insider has compiled a list of the most corrupt states by comparing the number of convictions with the total population. The Justice Department data give the number of people convicted of public corruption between 2002 and 2011.

South Carolina and New Hampshire, with no more than 1.3 convictions per 100,000, are among the least corrupt states.

Louisiana, with nearly 9 convictions per 100,000 people, topped the list of the most corrupt states.

Here are some of the states and their corruption ranking:

9. New Jersey
10. Virginia
11. Maryland
14. Pennsylvania
19. Florida
21. Massachusetts
25. New York
27. Rhode Island
29. Georgia
31. Connecticut
35. North Carolina
36. Texas
47. New Hampshire
