George Stauffer and Susan Chai Join DLA Piper
DLA Piper is pleased to announce the addition of George Stauffer as a senior attorney and Susan Chai as an attorney in the Insurance and Reinsurance Sector and Litigation practices. They join from Maple Life Financial, Inc., where Stauffer was Deputy General Counsel and Chai served as Assistant General Counsel. Chai will reside in DLA Piper’s Baltimore office and Stauffer joins the firm in Washington, D.C., but will also spend time in the Baltimore office.
Stauffer earned a J.D., with honors, from George Washington University Law School, where he was a member of The George Washington Law Review and The Moot Court Board, and a B.A., cum laude, from Franklin and Marshall College. Prior to joining Maple Life Financial, he served as an associate at Mayer Brown LLP and Crowell & Moring LLP in Washington, D.C.
Chai earned a J.D. from University of Baltimore School of Law, where she was an associate editor for the Law Forum Journal, and a B.S. in Business Management from Carnegie Mellon University. She is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and earlier in her career, served as a Judicial Intern to the Honorable Louis A. Becker, III in the Howard County Circuit Court in Maryland.
Their arrival comes on the heels of Kathleen Birrane joining DLA Piper’s Baltimore office as of counsel in the Insurance and Reinsurance Sector and Litigation practices in November 2012. Birrane most recently served as senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary at Maple Life Financial, Inc., where she led the legal, compliance and operational teams and was a member of the executive management team. She formerly served as Principal Counsel to the Maryland Insurance Administration from 2002 until 2007 and, prior to that, was a principal in the law firm of Kramon & Graham, P.A.
