Former Assistant General Counsel of Exelon Corp. Marc Sloane Joins Miles & Stockbridge's Labor & Employment Practice Group

Miles & Stockbridge P.C. announced today that Marc K. Sloane, former Assistant General Counsel of Exelon Corporation, has joined the firm’s Labor & Employment Practice Group as Counsel in its Baltimore office.
Sloane brings a significant amount of legal and strategic experience to the firm’s Labor & Employment Practice Group, one of the largest groups of its kind in the mid-Atlantic region. The team counsels employers on a wide variety of traditional labor issues that arise in both unionized workplaces and workplaces seeking to stay union free, including matters pertaining to collective bargaining, the National Labor Relations Act, wage and hour compliance, plant closing, and labor and antitrust issues. Although the majority of the practice involves litigation and dispute resolution, the team emphasizes proactive solutions to avoid problems and prevent small issues from becoming major disputes. The team represents regional and national clients in manufacturing and distribution, real estate and finance, retail, education, and healthcare.
ABOUT MARC K. SLOANE
Sloane provides legal and strategic labor and employment advice to executives, senior management, human resources professionals, and line organizations of diverse business sectors, with a focus on energy companies.
He represents management with respect to traditional labor matters, including unit determination hearings, union elections, and unfair labor practice charges. Sloane has extensive experience in collective bargaining as the lead strategist and lead negotiator. In these roles, he works closely with the client to develop an overall bargaining and strike preparation strategy that enables the business to attain its bargaining goals.
Sloane provides training and advice for unionized and union-free employers. For unionized employers, he proactively assists management with the application and interpretation of collective bargaining agreements that helps to reduce the number of grievances filed. Sloane’s labor expertise also includes union avoidance, where he provides training for first-line supervisors, prepares campaign messaging, and represents the employer during all phases of the NLRB process. Sloane’s work in this area has been instrumental in helping Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE) remain one of the few union-free utilities in the country despite repeated attempts by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers to organize its employees.
Sloane also represents management in employment-related matters, such as wrongful discharge, wage and hour issues, implementation of leave policies, reductions in force, workplace investigations, and discrimination. He works closely with management to develop and enforce personnel policies and counsels employers on how to avoid litigation.
Before joining Miles & Stockbridge, Sloane provided legal, strategic, human resources, and compliance advice to Exelon, formerly Constellation Energy Group and BGE. During his 18 years of service, Sloane held both legal and executive positions, including Assistant General Counsel, Executive Director-Labor & Employee Relations, Vice President-BGE Human Resources, and Senior Counsel. Sloane’s in-house experience in these roles gives him a unique opportunity to provide practical and business-centered advice to general counsel and in-house attorneys.
