This is an updated list of candidates for local, state and federal offices in Montgomery County as best as we could determine as of January 22, 2018. It will be updated at least once a week until the filing deadline of Feb. 27. Candidates for county executive and county council are listed first, followed by the state legislature, Congress and statewide offices.
We have done our best to identify candidates who have announced, filed for the office or filed for public financing of their campaigns. We may have missed some candidates, although the list includes over 150 candidates already, at least 33 just for the four at-large seats on the Montgomery County Council. We are missing photos and websites of some candidates.
As we kick off the new year with a historic election where public campaign financing will be used for the first time in Montgomery County, 11 candidates have qualified to receive matching campaign finance funds and 25 others are seeking qualification. As it stands, $11 million in county funds have been allocated to finance the races for county executive and county council. We include total disbursement amounts for qualified candidates in their profile. (See the general list of approved candidates below.)
Election News –
Chelsea Manning has filed for candidacy in the U.S. Senate race. Now two-term incumbent Sen. Ben Cardin, D, faces at least five contenders in the race. Manning, formerly Bradley Manning, the convicted Wiki leaker, and Centrist Project independent candidate Neal Simon, who may have no problem competing financially in the general election, should he join the race. Republican Sam Faddis is also running.
Republicans have also managed to find not one, not two, but THREE Republicans to run in the county council at-large race. At last count, 30 Democrats, 3 Republicans and 1 Green Party candidate are competing in the race.
