Vowing to bring an aggressive style as the architect of the Ravens' defense, Don "Wink" Martindale said he expects to "take our good and make it great" in his new role as defensive coordinator.
Meeting with the media Jan. 18 for the first time since he was promoted from linebackers coach to the Ravens' top defensive post, Martindale, 54, said it was "humbling" to earn the job and sees it as a personal second chance; his only other NFL experience as a defensive coordinator, with the Denver Broncos in 2010, ended after one season with his defense ranked last in the league.
Martindale, who is in his seventh season with the Ravens, takes over for Dean Pees, who announced his retirement Jan. 1. The Ravens reportedly reached out to former Indianapolis Colts coach and former Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano before settling on Martindale for the job.
