Goodbye “Food Deserts,” Hello “Healthy Food Priority Areas”

Previous administrations have referred to areas lacking access to healthy food as “food deserts.”

Baltimore is now going to use a more positive term – “healthy food priority areas,” Holly Freishtat, the city’s food policy director, said today.

“We want to show what our focus is on,” said Freishtat, speaking at Mayor Catherine Pugh’s weekly press availability. “Not the liability, but what we’re going to do about it.”
