Former Baltimore Ravens Kicker To Help Cultivate Community of Teamwork and Leadership

GBMC HealthCare Inc. today announced that the hospital has engaged two-time NFL Super Bowl Champion Matt Stover to enhance the hospital’s Art of Nursing initiative. Stover, a motivational speaker and expert on teamwork, will spend the next six months engaging with the hospital’s nursing program and helping GBMC to cultivate a nursing community built on the importance of strong leadership, accountability and teamwork.

To kick off the partnership, Stover will attend a December luncheon where he will speak directly with nurses about their challenges, passions and goals. Additional appearances will include various briefings and training sessions where he will speak to the nursing staff about creating leaders, building teams and taking ownership of their life-saving work.

“The skills required to run a successful team are the same, whether you are on a football field or in a hospital unit,” said Stover. “While I think a lot of my experience will relate to the overarching leadership discussions we will have, I am greatly looking forward to hearing directly from GBMC’s nursing staff about the unique challenges they face each and every day in the incredibly important line of work they have chosen.”

The Art of Nursing, GBMC’s nursing recognition program, is derived from the notion that nursing is the artful combination of science, knowledge and caring. The program was created to engage and recognize employees, and to inform the general public about what is means to be a nurse at GBMC.

“All of us here at GBMC know Matt Stover will be an asset to the growth and development of our nursing team and we look forward to hearing what advice and guidance he can bring to our nurses,” said JoAnn Z. Ioannou, DNP, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, Senior Vice President, Patient Care Services & Chief Nursing Officer at GBMC.“GBMC has been working hard to continuously refine and improve our nursing program and I believe Matt’s input will help us create a workplace where mentorship and interdisciplinary teamwork are constantly fostering new leaders.”

Matt Stover started his career with the New York Giants in 1990, winning Super Bowl XXV with the team that same year. In 1991, he signed with the Cleveland Browns and remained with the team as they moved to Baltimore and became the Baltimore Ravens. He was a part of the Ravens’ Super Bowl XXXV championship team in 2000 and retired with the Ravens in 2011 following a stint with the Indianapolis Colts. Stover founded the Matt Stover Foundation in 2002 with his wife, Debbie, to provide financial support to under-funded educational, religious and charitable organizations.
