Event Pick: Peter Stern Discusses His Aerial Photography at Creative Alliance

By Brandon Weigel, Baltimore Fishbowl

Peter Stern’s photographs look at once familiar and indistinguishable. There are large splotches of earth tones and snaking lines in his compositions, and upon close inspection, you’ll see the image is actually a coal mine or an Eastern Shore landscape.

Using a small plane and a camera, Stern flies low above his favorite landscapes and captures with a bird’s-eye view, landing in a place between the representational and abstraction. Hence the name of his current exhibit, on view at the Creative Alliance through Jan. 20, “Third Spaces.” It’s like getting lost in the details of a crisper, life-like landscape on Google Maps.

Stern will be discussing his work tonight in a gallery talk at the gallery.
