Dr. Vinod Lakhanpal Joins The National Retina Institute As Director Of Fellowship Program And Clinical Research

The National Retina Institute, an international leader in retinal care research and education, is pleased to announce that Vinod Lakhanpal, M.D., F.A.C.S. has joined the organization as Chief of Retina Services/Director of the Fellowship Program and Principal Research Investigator. Dr. Lakhanpal will work alongside Dr. Joshua Steiner and Dr. Matthew Katz to continue the longstanding tradition started by the late Dr. Bert Glaser and will provide strategic oversight and direction to the Institute’s fellowship program, while enhancing and expanding its clinical research studies.

Specializing in the surgical care and management of vitreo-retinal diseases, Dr. Lakhanpal brings more than 30 years of experience to the Institute. Lakhanpal is considered an expert on a variety of topics including the laser treatment of diabetic retinopathy and its complications, and the surgical treatment of retinal detachment and vitreous hemorrhage. Nationally and internationally known for his work in Massive Supra Choroidal Hemorrhage, he has received awards in teaching and was recently invited to examine the eyes of the Prime Minister of India in New Delhi.

Dr. Lakhanpal most recently served as Senior Partner and Director of Vitreo-Retinal service at Eye Consultants of Maryland and has one of the largest retinal practices in the State. He completed his residency in ophthalmology and received his Master of Science in Ophthalmology at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India. In 1975, Lakhanpal received a fellowship in retinal diseases and surgery at the University of Maryland. He currently holds a Clinical Professorship of Ophthalmology at the University of Maryland and was the Chief of Ophthalmology at Union Memorial Hospital from 1993-2016.
