Hord Coplan Macht Projects Earn Two National Design Awards

11/7/17

Hord Coplan Macht is pleased to announce that it has received a “Merit Award" and had a project selected as a “Published Project” by the American Institute of Architects Design for Aging KnowledgeCommunity. Presented at the 2017 Leading Age Conference in New Orleans, LA, both projects will be included in the next Design for Aging Review publication. The awards program is the industry’s largest and most prestigious honor and showcases facilities that advance environments for senior living.

Earning a Merit Award, the organization’s highest honor, was Brightview Bethesda, an urban senior living community being built on a tight site in downtown Bethesda, MD. Hord Coplan Macht and the owner, Brightview Senior Living, are creating a high-rise infill tower for assisted living and memory care residents in the heart of a thriving neighborhood. It is envisioned to be distinctive among senior living communities as a departure from the more traditional design styles predominant among suburban and rural communities, embracing contemporary features inspired by its urban location. The design of the project also encourages multigenerational community integration by offering street level amenities such as a coffee shop, spa and theater, which are open to both the public and residents. Additionally, the building will feature a striking seven-story tall art piece as part of the Bethesda Public Art Walkway.

Frasier was also honored by being selected as a “Published Project” in the Design for Aging Review. Located in Boulder, Colorado, this retirement community’s identity is informed and given shape by the front range of the Rocky Mountains, which rise a few miles west of campus. Hord Coplan Macht is designing a new, 98-unit, independent living building on the site of an Assisted Living building destroyed by a 2013 flood. The project also includes an addition and renovation of the commons, dining venues, main entry, arts and education building, and a wellness center expansion. A main goal of the program is to harmonize and distill the visual feel of the campus to better represent the unique character and values of the community.

“Hord Coplan Macht is passionate about providing design for seniors that enhances the holistic wellness of the residents who live there,” said Cynthia Shonaiya, AIA, Director of Hord Coplan Macht’s Senior Living Studio. “Receiving such a high honor is a reflection of the dedication of our talented team.”
