Cecil County’s top elected official was caught behind the wheel after having a few drinks last night, according to state police.
Alan McCarthy, a first-term Cecil County executive, was arrested at around 11:20 p.m. Thursday night in Elkton, according to Maryland State Police. A trooper was on his way for another service call when he noticed McCarthy’s black Infiniti weaving between the center and side lines on Route 213, the department said in a release. After stopping McCarthy, the trooper noticed his car smelled strongly of alcohol.
Police aren’t releasing any details about results of sobriety tests – even whether they conducted any – but the investigation was sufficient to warrant an arrest. McCarthy was taken to the North East Barrack and charged with driving under the influence, failure to obey properly placed traffic control device instructions, failure to drive a vehicle on the right half of a roadway and negligent driving. He was released to a sober driver’s custody.
