Among all the research parks in the world, the University of Maryland’s BioPark off of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard has been dubbed the best of 2017.

Officials from the research facility accepted the award of Most Outstanding Research Park of the Year at a conference last week in Huntsville, Ala., attended by representatives from dozens of research parks. UMD’s BioPark ranked ahead of all of the others because it’s “created a robust community of innovation while being an integral participant in the rejuvenation of West Baltimore,” according to a release from the Association of University Research Parks.

The BioPark has made a noticeable impact on a previously blighted section of Hollins Market, located just west of downtown. What was 12 acres of underutilized land in the early 2000s has now become a six-property hub for scientific research. UM BioPark says it’s created more than 1,000 jobs and more than $400 million in capital investment while bringing in a police station, a bank branch and basic city services like additional trash pickup and landscaping to the neighborhood. All this since 2003.
