Har Sinai Congregation to Honor Longtime Members at 175-year Anniversary

10/16/17

Har Sinai Congregation, the oldest continuously Reform congregation in the United States, will honor four members as part of its 175-year anniversary celebration this year. Rabbi Emeritus Floyd Herman, Dr. Jay Perman and Dr. David and Nancy Posner will be recognized for their longtime support of the congregation.

  • Rabbi Emeritus Floyd Herman of Pikesville served as Har Sinai Congregation’s rabbi from 1981 until his retirement in 2003. He then served as part-time rabbi of the Sandhills Jewish Congregation in Pinehurst, North Carolina, until 2011 and has served Temple Beth Shalom in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In addition, Herman is president of the board of trustees of Stadium Place, a low- and moderate-income housing community, and a member of the board of the Govans Ecumenical Development Corp. He was ordained rabbi at the Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati in 1964.
  • Dr. Jay Perman has been president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, since July 2010. A pediatric gastroenterologist, he continues to practice medicine through his weekly President’s Clinic, where he teaches team-based health care to students of medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, social work and law. Perman established a community engagement office and institute to support scholarship and advocacy on behalf of West Baltimore residents. He received his doctor of medicine degree with distinction from Northwestern University.
  • Dr. David and Nancy Posner have been active and supportive members of Har Sinai Congregation for more than 34 years, including support for the congregation’s religious school, the Nancy H. and David B. Posner Judaic Education Magnet at Har Sinai Congregation. David Posner retired as chief of gastroenterology at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore and received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. His wife, Nancy Posner, headed the cemetery committee at Har Sinai Congregation among other service activities.

They will be honored at Har Sinai Congregation’s 175-year anniversary celebration dinner on Nov. 11. Har Sinai Congregation was established in 1842 as the first Jewish congregation in the United States founded in Reform Judaism. The congregation is the only U.S. congregation to remain continuously Reform for 175 years and was instrumental in establishing Reform Judaism in the United States.
