Maya Rockeymoore Cummings announced her candidacy for the 2018 Maryland gubernatorial race on Thursday.

“Maryland is blessed with many strengths, but under Governor Larry Hogan we’re punching below our fighting weight,” Cummings said in a statement to the press. “Too many Maryland families are still struggling to make ends meet. We can do better, and we need a leader with real-world experience and bold ideas who will make Maryland’s economy work for all people and communities.”

Cummings has worked in public service for nearly two decades and founded a small business and a non-profit organization both centered on social policy strategy, which have been involved in efforts to expand Social Security benefits, to create childhood savings accounts for city students, and to curb junk food consumption.
