Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz today announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for governor of the state of Maryland.

“From building world-class public schools, to creating 21st century jobs, to protecting our Chesapeake Bay, results have always mattered to Marylanders, but right now we’re stuck in neutral,” said Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz. “Maryland deserves bold, experienced, and thoughtful leadership that will bring real results. That’s why I’m running to be our next Governor.”

During his announcement, Kamenetz pledged to build upon his legacy as a fierce advocate for public education. As County Executive, Kamenetz initiated an unprecedented $1.3 billion investment in school construction, building 16 new schools and 15 additions and renovations, creating modern learning environments for students. Under Kamenetz, Baltimore County has continued to adopt innovative policies inside the classroom which have raised the graduation rate to nearly 90 percent — while eliminating the graduation gap between African American and white students.

“Marylanders have long valued our commitment to public education, but in recent years we’ve slipped in national rankings. We need new leadership to rebuild aging schools, bring technology to our classrooms, and restore our schools to the best in the nation,” Kamenetz said. “My track record in education is unrivaled, and I will be the ‘Education Governor’ Maryland deserves. Together we can provide the long-term educational investments that the next economy will require of our children.”

Additionally, Kamenetz highlighted his successful hands-on experience managing an innovative, responsible, and efficient government in Baltimore County, including:

Attracting $5 billion in economic investment, adding 28,000 jobs to the local economy and cutting the unemployment rate in half;

Standing up to Donald Trump’s divisive polices by fighting to protect the religious, social and immigration freedoms of residents;

Safeguarding the Chesapeake Bay by spearheading efforts to preserve more than 2,000 miles of streams and watersheds, and 20,000 acres of rural and agricultural land;

Reducing crime to historic lows while serving as a statewide leader in the implementation of police body-worn cameras; and

Achieving remarkable economic stability—not once raising the property or income tax rate, while maintaining the highest credit rating in the country.

“Results matter and elected officials should be held accountable for what they promise and what they actually deliver. Not only do I have the right experience, but I also have a track record of results that no one can match,” Kamenetz said. “Throughout my career, I have always fought to protect Maryland values. As Governor, I will continue to fight for what we as Marylanders truly believe in: strong investment in our public schools, combating climate change, growing our economy, promoting thoughtful transportation strategies, and protecting those in need.”

Kamenetz began his career in public service as a prosecutor in the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office. In 1994, he was elected to the Baltimore County Council where he served four terms. In 2010, he was elected as Baltimore County’s 12th County Executive, and was reelected in 2014. He is a past President of the Maryland Association of Counties and the Baltimore Metropolitan Council.

A lifelong resident of Baltimore County, Kamenetz and his wife, Jill, are raising their two sons, Karson and Dylan, in Owings Mills.

Following today’s announcement, Kamenetz will embark on a tour across the state to meet with community members and business leaders to discuss thoughts and ideas for moving Maryland forward.
