Stan 'The Fan' Charles Reflects On Passing Of Former Orioles Don Baylor, Lee May

Baseball lost former Baltimore Orioles first baseman Lee May at 74 July 29 and former Orioles outfielder/designated hitter Don Baylor at 68 Aug. 7.

It's always struck me as odd that we feel such pangs when a celebrity dies, and I've found it to be sometimes most profound when truly transcendent heroes pass. I know people in the past couple years who really became depressed over the deaths of Arnold Palmer and Muhammad Ali.

But where this pain reverberates and feels most real is on the local level. Think back to hearing that Johnny Unitas had died and Earl Weaver had passed. And while the Modells weren't in Baltimore as long, it felt like a punch to the gut when Art Modell and David Modell died.
