Maryland head men’s basketball coach Mark Turgeon got off to an early start with his 2019 recruiting class Aug. 4, securing verbal commitments from twin brothers Makhi and Makhel Mitchell, both 6-foot-9 big men from District Heights, Md. who rank among the top players in the state for the 2019 class.
The twins’ AAU program, the DC Blue Devils, confirmed the news on social media.
Makhi Mitchell is the 38th-rated player in the nation in the 2019 class via 24/7 Sports’ composite rankings and top-rated player in the state. Makhel Mitchell is ranked 101st nationally and fifth in the state. Former Georgetown assistant coach Kevin Broadus had been recruiting the pair for the Hoyas and did the same for the Terps when he was hired by Turgeon in April, and the twins landed scholarship offers from Maryland not long after Broadus’s hiring, per 24/7 Sports.
