James Garland Honored by Maryland State Bar Association as Senior Lawyer of the Year

James P. Garland

Miles & Stockbridge is pleased to announce that James P. Garland, a principal in the firm’s Baltimore office, has been selected as the senior lawyer of the year by the Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA).

Garland represents clients in the areas of telecommunications, general business litigation, and labor and employment, and is deputy general counsel of the firm.  A fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers since 1981, he has longtime litigation experience in state and federal courts.

“Jim has been a legal leader, a mentor and a lifelong proponent of the highest ethical standards,” said John B. Frisch, chairman & CEO of Miles & Stockbridge. “Both formally and informally, he has generously made available to more junior trial lawyers his fund of wisdom and insights from more than 60 years of practice. Jim’s character and accomplishments as a lawyer make him immensely deserving of this honor.”

As a three-term chairman of the MSBA's special committee on law practice quality, Garland sought to improve the working lives and professional satisfaction of younger lawyers and was one of the principal forces in the drafting and publication of the Law Practice Quality Guidelines, which set forth a framework for mentorship within firms. For many years, he has served as a presenter for the MSBA’s professionalism course, seeking to instill an enhanced sense of professional obligation and legal ethics among applicants to the Maryland bar.

Garland chaired the committee on lawyer-client relationships for the American College of Trial Lawyers, which honored him with a citation for outstanding leadership. He is a past member of the organization’s Maryland state committee and continues to serve on its national moot court competition committee. He also has served on the boards of the Maryland chapter of the Federal Bar Association and the University of Baltimore’s Hoffberger Center for Professional Ethics.

The past president of Loyola University Maryland’s national alumni association and former board chair of its Maryland alumni chapter, Garland received the school’s alumni laureate award in 1996. He earned his J.D. from Villanova University School of Law in 1956 as part of its inaugural graduating class and is a life member of its Board of Consulters as well as a moot court panelist. In 2015, Villanova’s alumni association presented him with the Gerald Abraham Award for distinguished service to the law school.

He also was the founding chairman of the Baltimore Rowing Club and is a member of the Barristers’ Law Club. Garland received the MSBA senior lawyer of the year award at a banquet on May 7.
