The University of Maryland baseball team features a big-hitting lineup that has averaged 6.1 runs per game during the 2017 season. But solid hitting will get a team only so far, and that's where Brian Shaffer comes in.
Shaffer has become the unquestioned ace of Maryland's pitching staff and is a big reason for the program's return to the NCAA Tournament. The Big Ten's 2017 Pitcher of the Year, Shaffer has gone 7-3 with a 2.18 ERA.
The junior right-hander anchors a rotation that also includes left-hander Tyler Blohm, who earned the Big Ten's Freshman of the Year honor after going 8-6 with a 3.62 ERA, and junior right-hander Taylor Bloom (6-2, 3.98).
