Throughout the NCAA Tournament, the Maryland women’s lacrosse team persevered against several of the sport’s top teams to earn its fourth national championship of the last eight years. The Terps, who previously won titles during the 2010, 2014, and 2015 campaigns, now stand alone as the top women’s lacrosse program of the decade.
Maryland started the season’s final weekend with a 20-10 rout of fourth-seeded Penn State in a May 26 semifinal, and closed its undefeated campaign by beating an unseeded Boston College team, 16-13, in the title game May 28. The consecutive victories at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. allowed Maryland to finish its 2017 campaign with a 23-0 record. The top-seeded Terps, who were the nation’s highest-scoring team at 16.96 goals per game, became the first undefeated team to win the NCAA championship since the 2009 Northwestern titlists closed with a 23-0 mark.
Boston College, which was playing in its first-ever championship game, ended the campaign with a 17-7 record. The Eagles, who edged Navy, 16-15, in the national semifinals, gave a determined effort against a Maryland team that lost just three games during the last four years.
