Michael Hankin

Loyola University Maryland’s Sellinger School of Business and Management named Michael D. Hankin, president and CEO of Brown Advisory, as Business Leader of the Year for 2017. The award honors business executives who embody Loyola’s Jesuit commitment to community and service in the leadership of their organization.

Loyola will honor Hankin at the annual Business Leader of the Year dinner on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017, at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel in Baltimore.

“Mike Hankin leads a firm that prides itself on thoughtfulness, a value we hold deeply as a Jesuit university that emphasizes thoughtful, ethical leadership. This approach also overflows into Mike’s work in the Baltimore community, where he is actively involved in efforts to improve the health of both residents and Baltimore’s Inner Harbor,” said Kathleen A. Getz, Ph.D., dean of the Sellinger School.

Hankin has led Brown Advisory since 1998 when it became independent and largely employee-owned. The investment firm has offices in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New York, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Texas, and London and works with clients in every state and 34 other countries.

Outside Brown Advisory, Hankin serves in leadership roles for nonprofit organizations focusing on the environment and land conservation, education, and health care. As chairman of the Baltimore Waterfront Partnership and Management Authority—the public-private business tax district responsible for the landscaping, clean-up and safety of Baltimore’s waterfront—he has challenged the city to achieve a goal of making Baltimore’s Inner Harbor swimmable and fishable by 2020.

In addition, Hankin serves as trustee of Johns Hopkins University, trustee and vice chairman of Johns Hopkins Medicine, and chairman of the board of managers of the Applied Physics Lab. He is president of Land Preservation Trust, a trustee of the Chesapeake Conservancy and the Center for Large Landscape Conservation, as well as a director for the National Steeplechase Association.

Hankin also serves on the boards of directors of Stanley Black & Decker and two private companies, Tate Engineering Services and The Wills Group.

Prior to joining Brown Advisory, Hankin worked extensively with clients as a tax and business law partner with Piper & Marbury. He received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1982. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Emory University in 1979 where he graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.
