A celebrity’s name and likeness may create new sources of revenue long after the celebrity has died. A federal judge recently approved a licensing deal between the estate of Jimi Hendrix and an alcohol distribution company. The deal permits the licensee to sell bottles branded with the names of Hendrix’s songs such as Purple Haze and Voodoo Child and may include references to Hendrix, but references to Hendrix’s name must be in a relatively small typeface and may not infer any endorsement, sponsorship or affiliation between the product and the guitarist’s estate.
