Joseph Kelley III Serves on Cybersecurity Panel

1/27/17

By Joseph Kelley III, Offit Kurman

On Friday, January 20, 2017, Offit Kurman principal attorney, Joseph T. Kelley III, served on Advance’s Technology Best Practices Panel Discussion in downtown Baltimore.

The Technology Best Practices Panel Discussion focused on the top data security issues facing businesses today. Joe Kelley was featured on the panel alongside insurance professional Wayne Coffey, the president and owner of Coffey & Company. Joe Kelley discussed the legal aspects of data security, while Wayne Coffey offered an insurance perspective.

As the panel discussion began, Mr. Kelley remarked on data security as an emerging risk for small and mid-sized businesses. “It is not if but when will a company face a data breach within their workplace,” he remarked. Mr. Kelley then outlined practical steps that businesses need to take to protect data, prepare for the inevitable data breach, and respond to a breach when it occurs. He also discussed the responsibilities and liabilities business owners, executives, and directors have regarding security breaches – whether the breach affects employees, clients, business partners or all three. Mr. Coffey explained the importance of obtaining proper insurance before the data security breach occurs. He noted that policies vary wildly and identified the specific terminology that businesses need to look out for when considering insurance.

The panelists both underscored the importance performing a proper organization-wide security risk assessment and matching. Through a lively discussion of the recent mega-breaches at Yahoo, Mr. Kelley and Mr. Coffee outlined tools for establishing good cyber governance and culture.

The panel discussion was held at Ruth’s Chris in downtown Baltimore and was attended by local businesses. After the panel discussion was complete, the attendees were able to ask more specific questions through a question and answer session.
