Linowes and Blocher Bolsters Commercial Litigation/Bankruptcy, Real Estate and Land Use/Zoning Practices

Linowes and Blocher LLP continues to enhance its services in key practice areas with the addition of Anthony F. Cavanaugh as partner to the firm’s Commercial Litigation and Real Estate Practice Groups, based in the Bethesda office; elevation of John T. Farnum,  a Bethesda-based member of the Commercial Litigation/Bankruptcy Practice Group, to partner; and addition of Philip C. Dales as associate in the Land Use/Zoning Practice Group. Cavanaugh joins the firm from Arnold & Porter, Kaye Scholer and Dales from Hyatt & Weber, P.A.

Cavanaugh focuses his practice on representing clients in complex commercial litigation in the real estate and hospitality industries, including evaluating and litigating disputes with management companies, franchisors, tenants, lenders and vendors. In addition to litigation, Cavanaugh represents clients in the negotiation and enforcement of management contracts, asset management, and evaluation of hotel and commercial property operations. He has handled cases involving toxic tort litigation, including the defense of a leading chemical manufacturer in a series of medical monitoring class actions. He also has represented manufacturers and distributors of military supplies in commercial disputes. Cavanaugh earned his JD from Georgetown University Law Center and BA from Fairfield University, cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa.

Farnum concentrates his practice on litigation involving bankruptcy, creditors’ rights, business disputes and real estate. He has substantial experience in representing financial institutions, commercial landlords, developers, investors, asset purchasers, and other parties in bankruptcy proceedings and out-of-court workouts across the United States. In addition, Farnum also regularly appears in federal and state courts in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia, representing clients in a wide variety of matters, including partnership and shareholder disputes, breach of contract suits, and construction-related disputes. Before joining the firm, Farnum served as a law clerk to the Honorable Ross W. Krumm, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Virginia. He earned his JD, cum laude, and MBA from the University of Richmond, and his BA from Virginia Tech.

Dales focuses his practice on land use law, real property law and administrative law, including liquor licensing for retail licensees, distributors and manufacturers. He has successfully represented clients in matters involving variances, special exceptions, planned unit development, comprehensive planning and comprehensive zoning. He has obtained favorable decisions for clients from the Circuit Court to the Court of Appeals, Maryland's highest court.

Dales earned his JD from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, master’s of Urban & Environmental Planning from the University of Virginia School of Architecture, and BA from Washington and Lee University.
