Offit Kurman Attorneys Hosted Employment Law Workshop: Looking Back on 2016 and What’s Ahead in 2017

11/17/16

On November 15th, Offit Kurman hosted the Ever-Changing Employment Law Landscapes workshop to review significant labor and employment developments in 2016 and to discuss what may come in 2017 with the incoming federal Republican administration. The workshop was hosted at The Hotel At Arundel Preserve and was well-attended by local business owners, executives, and community leaders from the Baltimore-Washington region.

The Ever-Changing Employment Law Landscapes workshop was divided into three subtopics: (1) Changes to the FLSA “White Collar” Exemption Law, (2) The EEOC’s Strategic Enforcement Plan: Fiscal Years 2017 – 2021, and (3) The New and Scary NLRB: Why Even Non-union Employers Need to be Concerned. Attorney Gregory Currey presented the first topic and delivered three solutions employers can use to abide by the FLSA’s changes to the “White Collar” Exemption Law. Then, Practice Group Leader Laura Rubenstein presented the EEOC’s Strategic Enforcement Plan and provided real-world examples of why employers need to be aware of the mistreatment of employees. Finally, Founder Howard Kurman discussed the NLRB, specifically noting how that agency has significantly focused its attention on non-union companies and their various policies and procedures contained in employee handbooks.

“The changes in 2016 have greatly impacted labor and employment laws,” stated Laura Rubenstein, the Leader of Offit Kurman’s Labor and Employment Practice Group. “And with the recent election, there are more changes anticipated in 2017 and during the new Presidential administration. At Offit Kurman, we provide companies with timely updates in labor and employment laws and are always hosting educational programming for our clients and friends of the firm, whether in-person or remote.” Rubenstein continued, “It is energizing to lead a workshop like Tuesday’s, where we can bring together our clients and local business leaders to provide relevant updates and help them anticipate changes in the employment law arena.”
