The University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law has launched two new online master’s degree programs, one in the rapidly growing field of cybersecurity law, and a second in homeland security and crisis management law. Classes for the two new degrees begin in February 2017.
Designed for working professionals without a JD degree, all courses in the four-semester part-time program will be taught online, with students earning a Master of Science in Cybersecurity Law or a Master of Science in Homeland Security and Crisis Management Law.
“Our law school is particularly well positioned to educate professionals in these important fields,” said Donald B. Tobin, Dean of Maryland Carey Law. “More than 40 experts at our Center for Health and Homeland Security have been working for years with the nation’s top public officials to develop plans, policies and legislation to protect our nation from man-made and natural catastrophes. Maryland is also home to NSA, NASA and a thriving private sector serving these institutions.”
Students seeking the new degrees will take two semesters of foundational legal courses followed by two semesters of courses pursuing their specialization, including a capstone project.
“The online format offers great flexibility for professionals in demanding positions,” noted Dean Tobin. “And it is particularly well suited to cybersecurity and crisis management fields which are national and international in scope.”
Maryland Carey Law is already a leader in the fields of cyber and national security. It offers specializations in cybersecurity and crisis management to students in its traditional JD program and to LL.M. candidates, lawyers seeking a Master of Laws degree.
In 2015, it launched a now-thriving Master of Science in Law (MSL) program, which offers more than 80 working professionals four-semesters of traditional classroom instruction during the evenings at the University of Maryland in College Park. MSL students must specialize in health care law, environmental law, patent law, cybersecurity law or crisis management. Current students who specialize in cybersecurity or crisis management will complete their degrees in the face-to-face College Park program, but as of January 2017, new students pursuing those specializations will do so online.
