Third year nursing student is Air Force spouse

Stratford University is pleased to announce Amanda Hernandez-Calhoun is the recipient of Stratford’s first Military Spouse Scholarship.

Hernandez-Calhoun, who has earned an impressive 3.71 GPA, is a third-year student in the Nursing Program at Stratford University’s Woodbridge Campus. At Woodbridge, she initiated and organized a highly effective Nursing Council, serving as president, and she also worked in the Career Services Office as a work study student. The $3,000 scholarship will help her continue her education at Stratford.

Hernandez-Calhoun is the wife of Staff Sergeant Anthony Calhoun, currently serving on active duty with the OSI Air Force Office of Special Investigations on Quantico.

“Being married to an active duty military member is the most difficult lifestyle any wife can experience. We never know when our husband is going to deploy or leave for weeks on end or where we will be in two years, or even tomorrow,” said Hernandez-Calhoun in her essay describing her experience as a military wife. “My husband once told me that this is not a career, it’s a lifestyle — and I believe in those words. So, I will always support his decisions and keep the candle light lit while he is away from home.”

“We are so excited to award our first-ever Military Spouse Scholarship to Amanda,” said Mary Ann Shurtz, Executive Vice President of Stratford University. “She is an incredibly talented and hardworking student and a dedicated military spouse. We could not have selected a more deserving candidate. We are proud that Amanda is a part of Stratford.”
