Mindgrub Hosts Students of Year Up Baltimore for Career Day

7/8/16

On Friday, July 1st, Mindgrub welcomed nine students from this year’s Year Up Baltimore program to its headquarters for a presentation about careers at Mindgrub and a tour of the facility. Year Up is a national 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide underserved young adults ages 18-24 with skills, professional experience, and support so that they can succeed in their careers and education. The organization has also been featured on 60 Minutes with Morley Safer.

Students arrived promptly at 9 AM accompanied by Year Up’s Director of Corporate Partnerships, Scott Robertson. The students networked over breakfast with Mindgrub’s Marketing Manager Kelly Brown, Lead Software Engineer Brian Thompson, and IT Engineer Thomas Evans.

Brian Thompson and Thomas Evans then gave the students a presentation outlining their respective career paths. Thompson, who started out as an intern at Mindgrub, talked about his journey to becoming the lead software engineer, while Evans talked about how he had explored other career options before returning to school and eventually becoming Mindgrub’s in-house IT professional. Both paths seemed to strike a chord with the audience and the presentation sparked a lot of intelligent conversation and questions.

After the presentation and discussion, the students were given a tour of the Mindgrub offices and treated to a demo of the new Holodeck. Students had fun playing Surgeon Simulator with the HTC Vive virtual reality headsets.

Mindgrub is dedicated to supporting education and growth in the Baltimore community. They have recently donated old tech to the Safe Alternative Foundation for Education and St. Elizabeth School in Baltimore. They are also looking forward to hosting the 2016 Education Technology Innovation Summit (ETIS) this September 28th.
