LANHAM, Md. - Doctors Community Hospital received the Leslie Ebert Synergy for Life Award from Washington Regional Transplant Community (WRTC), a nonprofit agency that recovers organs and tissues for transplants and research. The award recognizes smaller hospitals that support organ, eye and tissue donation.

"We're honored to work with WRTC and receive the Leslie Ebert Award. Beyond our commitment to support organ donation, the honor recognizes our commitment to promote hope and healing for families who've lost loved ones," said Philip B. Down, president of Doctors Community Hospital.

Doctors Community Hospital was the overall winner, meeting all the criteria by displaying a culture of donation through donation initiatives, having greater than 90 percent death reporting compliance, having greater than 85 percent timely reporting of deaths and having high tissue donor conversion rates of greater than 20 percent.

"WRTC wanted a way to honor those hospitals that excel in all donation standards, but are not eligible to receive a Medal of Honor from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services because of organ donation potential," said Kenneth Boyd, director of hospital development and professional education at WRTC.

Doctors Community Hospital received the award, named after Leslie Ebert, a WRTC employee who died in 2001, during a WRTC symposium for physicians, nurses and spiritual care professionals in the Washington, D.C., area. WRTC is the area's federally designated organ procurement organization.

Doctors Community Hospital (www.dchweb.org) is a 219-bed acute care medical and surgical hospital. Founded in 1975 by leading physicians in Prince George's County, the hospital has continued to be in the forefront in providing state-of-the-art medical care while remembering the elemental human touch.
