Columbia, Md. based charitable organization announces it will provide additional funding to the first youth triathlon program of its kind nationwide
Columbia, Md. - TriColumbia, the Mid-Atlantic's premier endurance event production company, today announced its Learn2Tri youth triathlon education program is the recipient of a $4,000 grant from The Columbia Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to inspiring life-long giving and connecting people, places and organizations to worthy causes across Howard County.
In September 2011, TriColumbia launched Learn2Tri in six schools throughout Howard County in an effort to provide students with the skills, knowledge and confidence necessary to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. During regular physical education classes, elementary, middle and high school students participated in the elements of a traditional triathlon (swim, bike, run) for the duration of one semester.
"The Learn2Tri program is providing a new opportunity for students to be active in a fun and exciting way, "said Anne Johnson, Director of Triathlon & Wellness Training at TriColumbia. "We are excited and privileged to have the ability to grow the program with the help and support of organizations such as The Columbia Foundation."
Currently, Learn2Tri has grown to seven schools, and more than 650 students have completed the program. Based on its success, Learn2Tri will expand to six new schools in Howard County next year for a total of 13 programs. The $4,000 grant from The Columbia Foundation will help fund the swim component of the program, which includes the cost of swimming instructors and transportation to the venue.
"The Columbia Foundation is excited to support TriColumbia's Learn2Tri program," said Priscilla Reaver, Senior Program Officer for The Columbia Foundation. "Through Learn2Tri, students are not only learning about fitness, but also about the discipline needed to achieve their goals and the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle throughout their lifetimes. This partnership between TriColumbia and the Howard County Public School System is a great example of the impact that can be made when two organizations collaborate around a common goal for the betterment of the community and the people it serves."
"Both TriColumbia and The Columbia Foundation have a deep rooted history of giving back to the local community," said Robert Vigorito, President and foundation of TriColumbia. "We are honored that The Columbia Foundation is in full support of Learn2Tri, and we thank them for helping to make this program possible."
