SACCO FOUNDATION MATHEMATICS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM AIMS TO EXPAND
Award recognizes outstanding efforts in the field of mathematics in Harford County
Forest Hill, Maryland – The William J. Sacco Critical Thinking Foundation will present The Dr. William J. Sacco Award for Excellence in Applied Mathematics for 2012 at its inaugural fundraising event next month. The scholarship program was begun in 2004 and honors Dr. Sacco for his lifetime accomplishments in the field of applied mathematics and for his ceaseless dedication to the mentoring of young people in Harford County.
The goal of the Dr. William J. Sacco Award for Excellence in Applied Mathematics is to recognize and reward thosehigh school students in Harford County who have demonstrated outstanding ability and aptitude in the field of mathematics and whose work reflects the concepts and processes that were espoused by Dr. Sacco. Recipients will receive a $1,000 scholarship toward their continuing education.
The William J. Sacco Foundation was created following Dr. Sacco’s passing on July 20, 2011. As a Harford County resident for more than 50 years, Dr. Sacco served in the United States Army, taught mathematics at Bel Air High School and worked for the Department of Defense at Aberdeen Proving Ground. He earned a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the University of Delaware, taught at several universities and was the chief consultant for the American College of Surgeons Major Trauma Outcome Study. Dr. Sacco also co-founded Tri-Analytics, Inc., a medical data management, software, and research company. As a researcher, he was world renowned for making key contributions to the development of trauma severity scores with applications to patient triage, tracking, and outcome evaluation, in particular, the injury severity score, which is used throughout the world today. He was named an Honorary Fellow of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma in 1999 for his lifetime contributions in this field.
Forest Hill-based Digital Innovation, Inc. initiated the scholarship program in 2004 to recognize the mentoring efforts and contributions Dr. Sacco made within the field of mathematics. This year will be the first time the Award will formally be presented by the William J. Sacco Foundation.
“Dr. Sacco’s work in mathematics and how it could be applied to trauma medicine impacted the lives of millions of people,”says Dr. John F. Kutcher, Foundation Chairman and President & CEO of Digital Innovation, Inc. “Bill Sacco was a friend and mentor and we are proud to continue his legacy by recognizing the efforts of Harford County’s motivated and outstanding students.”
This year’s inaugural fund-raising event will be held at Liberatore’s Ristorante (562 Baltimore Pike; Bel Air, Maryland 21014) on Sunday, March 11th from 5:00PM until 8:00 PM. See www.SaccoFoundation.orgfor additional details. In addition to recognizing this year’s scholarship winners, the upcoming fund raising event will kick off several Foundation efforts. These include expanding the scholarship program to all Harford County high schools in 2013, and an opportunity to recognize the efforts of mathematics teachers and administrators in Harford County at future events. “Applied mathematics is vital to today’s high tech economy; and we want to recognize not only outstanding students, but also the teachers who are uniquely positioned to nurture and develop those skills at a formative age,” says Dr. Kutcher.
Through the generosity of several sponsors, the Foundation is able to invite a number of local mathematics teachers as guests to this year’s event. “We want a large component of our inaugural event to be the presence of Harford County Math teachers and administrators.” says Kutcher. “Our goal is to make the annual William J. Sacco Foundation event a marquis date in the County’s mathematics educational community.” High school math teachers and administrators interested in attending the event as guests should contact the William J. Sacco Foundation at: contact@saccofoundation.org.
