United Way Renews Sheela Murthy's Board Membership
United Way of Central Maryland has renewed the three year term of Sheela Murthy, Esquire, to its Board of Directors. United Way of Central Maryland (UWCM) is committed to bringing the community together to change people's lives, moving them from crisis to stability. Murthy is the Founder and President of the prestigious immigration practice, the Murthy Law Firm, which is dedicated to helping immigrants achieve their American Dream of living and working in this great country.
UWCM helps individuals and families who are vulnerable and at risk meet their emergency needs, stabilize their lives and ultimately achieve a better quality of life. For 86 years UWCM has worked with leading health and human service providers across the region and has identified the most effective strategies to improve the most lives.
Murthy helps lead the MurthyNayak Foundation, a nonprofit nongovernmental organization that seeks to help with children's and women's health and educational needs, support programs that assist immigrants, educate and advocate for immigration, and support disaster relief efforts. She is a much sought after speaker who is passionate about entrepreneurship, motivation, leadership and women's issues.
Murthy serves on boards for a number of organizations including the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Maryland Chamber of Commerce, American Immigration Council and Stevenson University. In addition, she helps lead United Way International and United Way of Central Maryland, which named her the 2009 Philanthropist of the Year. A committed philanthropist, Murthy is recognized for work in the United States and her native India.
Among her other honors, Murthy was named among the 2011 Top 50 Most Influential Marylanders and the Maryland Top 100 Women Circle of Excellence Winner by The Daily Record. She also received the Small Business of the Year Award by the Maryland Chamber of Commerce and Ernst and Young's Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
