BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital is proud to announce that it received a $12,500 "Quality of Life" grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. The money will help Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital purchase Bioness® equipment for its Adaptive Equipment Rehabilitation Clinic (the clinic). The clinic works with patients with neuro-motor disorders to maximize their movement as much as possible given their physical limitations.

The award was one of 77 grants totaling more than $508,000 awarded by the Reeve Foundation to nonprofit organizations nationwide that aid in providing more opportunities, access, and daily quality of life for individuals living with paralysis, their families, and caregivers.

Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital is distinguished by its interdisciplinary approach to the assessment and management of adolescents and children with neuromuscular impairments, paralysis and/or movement disorders. Within the clinic, for example, care is provided by a team of 21 experienced specialists in physiatry, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.

The Bioness® equipment will be used in conjunction with a program of traditional therapeutic exercises. Patients whose muscles can be retrained will require several months of therapy to gain normal range of motion and strength. For those patients with more severe conditions where muscles cannot be retrained, the Bioness® equipment will be used to augment their range of motion. Using these two therapy modalities, patients will acquire greater functionality, range of motion, muscle strength, and the ability to move independently.

"The Reeve Foundation grant will enable us to expand the rehabilitation options we provide our patients, improve their capacity for mobility and dramatically improve their quality of life," said Sheldon Stein president and CEO of Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital. "Thanks to the Reeve Foundation's generosity, our patients will have the opportunity to live fuller, more independent lives."

"We are honored to carry on Dana Reeve's legacy through the Quality of Life Grants Program," said Peter T. Wilderotter, president and CEO of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. "We believe those affected by paralysis deserve the best resources, support and community. We are proud to award these organizations who provide opportunities to those individuals living with paralysis, their families and friends, and caregivers, to enhance their well-being."

Since the program was developed in 1999 by the late Dana Reeve, over 1,900 Quality of Life grants have been awarded, totaling nearly $14.8 million. The Reeve Foundation's Quality of Life grants are divided into three categories, Actively Achieving, Bridging Barriers and Caring and Coping. Some Quality of Life grants are funded through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Award #1U59DD000338). These grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations that address the needs of people living with paralysis caused by spinal cord and other injuries, diseases and birth conditions.
