BALTIMORE -- As steps away from his roles as president and CEO of Blue Sky Factory after the e-mail marketing service provider was acquired by WhatCounts, he is looking to ramp up his own efforts as an angel investor to help Baltimore's startup and entrepreneurial community.
Cangialosi talked with citybizlist recently about Blue Sky Factory's sale and his plans for the future.
While he couldn't discuss terms of the deal, Cangialosi said he had been talking with WhatCounts since early this year to see how their own recent acquisition had progressed. WhatCounts, based in Atlanta, had been acquired last December by Mansell Group, which itself had been bought by Riverside Company, a private equity firm with $3 billion in assets under management.
WhatCounts eventually approached him with an offer to create a combined company whose capacity, resources, and vision proved irresistible. With a slew of high-profile clients, including Virgin America, Costco, and Alaska Airlines, WhatCounts brings data integration tools, a team of engineers, and a sales force that complement Blue Sky's products and services, including its Publicaster e-mail marketing service and focus on enhancing clients' marketing capabilities.
BlueSky will keep its office in Baltimore under the WhatCounts brand. The now-regional office will be led by Doug Broujos - previously COO and managing partner of Blue Sky - and retain the rest of its staff except for Cangialosi.
Cangialosi will serve on the board as well as perform product consulting for WhatCounts, but will be removed from the day-to-day operations.
As for his next ventures, Cangialosi said that he is looking forward to taking some time off and then helping local entrepreneurs gain more traction by serving as an angel investor. He thinks the region is ripe for startup growth and recently helped back Dave Troy's 410 Labs, the creator of Shortmail, which just raised $750,000.
Cangialosi is also slated to speak at Wednesday's entrepreneurial event - Think Big Baltimore - about bootstrapping.
Blue Sky Factory was founded in 2001 and works with clients in multiple industries to help them grow through email marketing. The Baltimore-based company helps integrate online platforms with industry-standard tools including Google Analytics, Salesforce.com, and social networks like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn to produce customizable online marketing campaigns.
