Towson, MD - Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz joined U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski, Governor Martin O'Malley, university officials and business entrepreneurs to celebrate 16 cybersecurity companies that have moved to the bwtech@UMBC Research and Technology Park in the past 16 months.

"The recent burst of cyber security companies at UMBC is just the beginning of new economic and job opportunities in Baltimore County," said Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz. "Our strategic location and superb university resources will play a growing role as the nation develops new technologies to protect critical information systems at agencies such as the Social Security Administration and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in Woodlawn."

New companies at UMBC include Telcordia, the first major company to establish a presence in Baltimore County as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process that is bringing defense communications commands to Maryland.

The 70 tenant companies at bwtech@UMBC directly employ 1,125 people, including 161 in cyber-related jobs. Companies at the Research Park in Catonsville benefit from synergies with university researchers, students, faculty and facilities, as well as proximity to BWI Airport, National Security Agency, U.S. military Cyber Commands at Ft. Meade, and federal agency headquarters in Woodlawn.

Northrop Grumman also announced that Five Directions and Rogue Networks have been named the first two companies to participate in the company's Cync Program, part of bwtech's cyber-focused Advantage Incubator.

Companies at bwtech draw on UMBC's strengths in research and workforce development. UMBC is an NSA Center of Academic Excellence for information assurance education and research. It ranks fourth among U.S. research universities in the production of IT degrees and certificates, and offers master's degree and graduate certificate programs in cybersecurity. The UMBC Training Center is a leader in IT and cybersecurity training.
