To Add 15,000 Jobs, Make $4 Billion Capital Investment
BALTIMORE, MD -- New and expanding businesses in Maryland announced plans in 2010 to add more than 15,000 jobs and make a $4 billion capital investment, triple the investment that businesses announced in 2009, according to the 2010 New & Expanding Businesses in Maryland report released today by the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED). In total, 364 projects were announced in Maryland in 2010, up nearly 25 percent from 2009, with 73 new projects and 291 expansion projects.
"The New and Expanding Businesses Report is clear evidence that Maryland's economy is moving in the right direction and that the investments we have made in job creation initiatives are paying off," said DBED Secretary Christian S. Johansson. "While we continue to see the tremendous impact of BRAC and other federal agency moves, we also saw a tremendous jump in investment in 2010 by our private sector, which is helping to accelerate Maryland's economic recovery."
Of the 364 projects announced in the State, Montgomery County had 61, followed by Baltimore County with 57, Baltimore City with 55, Howard County with 43 and Anne Arundel County with 41. The industry sectors with the most new activity were professional services, which includes legal, accounting, biotechnology, IT, engineering and management consulting; accommodation and food services; manufacturing and wholesale trade.
Topping the list of job creators were several military commands and federal government agencies. The U.S. Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), which is relocating from Virginia to Ft. Meade in Anne Arundel County as a result of Base Realignment and Closure, is bringing 4,380 jobs to the State. The U.S. Cyber Command, also locating in Anne Arundel, announced 1,000 jobs new jobs. In addition, the U.S. Census Bureau, which temporarily located in Baltimore County as part of the 2010 Census, created 1,400 jobs.
Among the top private sector employers announcing jobs were Ball Aerospace & Technologies in Prince George's County with 300 new jobs; Bob's Discount Furniture in Harford County with 200 new jobs; The Knowland Group, a hospitality services company in Wicomico County, with 200 new jobs; and Middle River Aircraft Systems in Baltimore County, with 200 new jobs, more than 30 of which qualified for the state's Job Creation and Recovery Tax Credit.
This report, which is compiled by DBED's Office of Research with input from county economic development officials, is based on public announcements of planned employment creation and capital expenditures by businesses in Maryland. Some of the new facilities announced may not yet be in operation, as there can be a lag time between announcement and occupancy.
