BALTIMORE -- Johns Hopkins University is ranked second among the top 100 social media colleges, according to StudentAdvisor.com.

The publication said that it compared more than 6,000 colleges and universities and post-secondary schools "in terms of their mastery of public social media methods, tools and websites."

Harvard University - where Facebook was born - placed first.

StudentAdvisor.com lauded Johns Hopkins' social media pages and said that its iPhone app is best-in-class.

Hopkins Interactive, for instance, is a social media site created for prospective and admitted students to "connect with the University by offering them open, uncensored information about student life on campus and in Baltimore." All its content is created by Hopkins students and includes videos, message boards, blogs, Twitter, and Facebook pages.

The iPhone app, Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus, includes walking directions of the campus, campus tours, and view points of interest.

Hopkins was the only university from Maryland to make the list. Howard University and Georgetown, both in Washington D.C., ranked 32 and 58, respectively.

StudentAdvisor.com said that it collects information about how "active and effective" the schools are at engaging their audience on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other social media tools, such as iTunes and podcasts while accounting for each school's population size and other metrics when making its rankings.
