Percentage of Women on Maryland Boards Holds Steady, but Lags behind National Average
BALTIMORE - The percentage of women on boards of public companies in Maryland in 2010 remained the same as 2009 at 9.2 percent, though women held six fewer seats in 2010 compared to 2009, according to Network 2000's "Census of Women Board Directors in Maryland." The number of Maryland public companies dropped from 92 in 2009 to 86 in 2010.
"The downturn in the Maryland appears to have impacted the number of companies in this year's census, which affected the results," said Ellen Fish, president-elect of Network 2000 and key researcher. "The census shows women remain under-represented on boards in Maryland, despite the clear value of diversity on boards. Women make up half the population and offer leadership from a different perspective - one that's vital to the bottom line."
Network 2000, which promotes the advancement of women in professional and executive roles, released the census report at its annual Roadmap to the Boardroom symposium March 22. The census looks at trends in Maryland, the progress of women becoming executives as well as the roles of specific companies and industries in appointing women to boards.
Other census findings include:
• Maryland continues to lag behind the national average of board seats held by women by 6 percent. Women hold 15.2 percent of board seats nationally.
• Forty companies (43.5 percent) had no women on their corporate boards, an improvement over 44 (47.8 percent) in 2009.
• The number of companies where women held 20 percent or more of the board seats decreased from 14 (15.2 percent) in 2009 to nine (10.5 percent) in 2010.
• The number of companies in Maryland with no women executives declined from 55 (59.8 percent) in 2009 to 54 (58.7 percent) in 2010.
• Fewer companies (28) headquartered in Maryland have no women in either their boardroom or executive suite - down from 30 in 2009.
