Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition

Baltimore County, Md. -- Cyber sleuths in training will compete in the 6th Annual CyberWatch Mid-Atlantic Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition, Thursday through Saturday, March 10-12, 2011, at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland. Smart grid technologies are the focus of this year's battle of hacker teams against the computer network teams.

According to Casey O'Brien, director of the Institute for Cyber Security at the Community College of Baltimore County and competition director for the Mid-Atlantic CCDC, " Smart grid technologies, which control electricity, telecommunications systems and various other critical infrastructure are obvious targets for malicious hackers. Those training for careers in cyber security must be ready to react quickly to block infiltration and prevent loss of needed public services. These competitions are excellent ways to give students that background."

Finalists are eight teams from: Craven Community College (North Carolina), Capitol College (Maryland), Forsyth Technical Community College (North Carolina), George Washington University (Washington, DC); Hagerstown Community College (Maryland), James Madison University (Virginia), University of Maryland, College Park (Maryland) and Wilmington University (Delaware).

Students from more than 22 schools, representing undergraduate and graduate students from two- and four- year schools in the region, competed to qualify for the eight spots in the regional finals. The winning team at the 6th Annual CyberWatch Mid-Atlantic Regional CCDC will compete in the Deloitte National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition, April 8-10 in San Antonio, Texas, against winners from the eight other regional competitions.
