When I work with clients on hiring strategies, we talk about MUSTS (the critical skills people need to do the job) and the WANTS (the skills we'd like people to have). If you prepare to hire well, you've done a thorough assessment of what the position requires, how critical each job responsibility is, and what experience, education and skill someone needs to perform that skill set adequately.

But it's hard to resist looking down the road at a fuzzy future and trying to predict the skills someone will need for potential success. With the present bring uncertain, the next year (or few years) can look pretty ambiguous. However, there are skills that all employees will need to increase the likelihood that they will be agile and adaptable for what may lay ahead.

Basics - basic competency in reading, writing and math. (at the level required by the position)

Experience - previous practice in a workplace (or at the very least, evidence that they can learn specialized knowledge and skills)

Computers - keyboarding and database management

Administration - organization, data management, customer service and responsiveness.

Additionally - don't be surprised if you want employees to know how to

• Use social media to leverage work objectives
• Manage social learning tools to continue professional development
• Influence decision makers and develop techniques for overcoming objections and gaining alignment

Hire for the needs you have today. Remember that every employee at EVERY level will need to acquire some new skills down the road. Anyone who doesn't think so - may not be a good future bet for your organization.
